Are you planning a weekend in Fargo, ND? Here are five reasons you need to go to Black Coffee and Waffle Bar in Downtown Fargo.
About as much as I love finding local breweries when I’m traveling somewhere, I love finding a good local coffee shop. Yes, I will stop at a Starbucks (I love PSL time) or a Caribou Coffee around home if I’m driving by but there is something magical about a local coffee shop.
I was not planning on finding a coffee shop while in Fargo, but we had been wandering around the Red River Market and decided an afternoon coffee would be a nice pick-me-up.
We walked by the Black Coffee and Waffle Bar and decided to try it.

1. Location, Location, Location
The Black Coffee and Waffle Bar is located just off Broadway and 2nd Ave in downtown Fargo. It is within walking distance of several hotels including the Radisson Blu, the Jasper Hotel, and the Hotel Donaldson.
The Broadway Square pavilion is across the street so you can either enjoy your coffee (and waffles if you want) inside or you can take it go to, and sit in the park. Being located in the heart of downtown Fargo makes this a perfect place to grab a cup of coffee on the go or to sit back and relax.
2. The Atmosphere at Black Coffee and Waffle Bar is Fire
When you walk into Black Coffee and Waffle Bar the first thing you see is the floor-to-ceiling black and white menu with fun names for their various waffles and the list of coffee drinks. The ceilings are painted black and the walls are white with natural wood shelves, trim, table tops, and seat chairs.
The wall along 2nd Ave is lined with huge garage doors that are opened on warm summer and fall days. The day we were there it was cool with a light off and on rain so the doors were only opened a little to let some fresh air inside. I would love to go there on a warm summer day and enjoy the breezes coming in.
That day, a group of friends sat at a table behind us playing Dungeons and Dragons. A middle-aged couple sat in the corner playing Heads Up. And a family sat at a high-top table talking while they waited for their order.
Black Coffee and Waffle Bar is a perfect place for anyone who wants to relax with friends, play a game, or just enjoy the fresh air.
3. Fun Waffles with Fun Names
Black Coffee and Waffle Bar has a unique waffle menu. With fun names including Naughty Waffle, S’More Waffle, the Dakota Luau, and One Bad Pig. Just those names alone will put a smile on your face. But they are more than just fun names, they include ingredients like baked apples, peanut butter, marshmallows, graham crackers, pineapple salsa, and honey BBQ drizzle. Don’t worry, that is not all one waffle.
If we had not already had brunch at Rosewild restaurant, I would have ordered the Dakota Luau, a waffle with pulled pork, pineapple salsa, and honey BBQ drizzle.
If you prefer something else, you can always build your own waffle too. They also have vegan and gluten-free batter options too!
4. The Black Coffee and Waffle House Coffee
When you make the decision to put “coffee” in your name, you better have good coffee. Black Coffee and Waffle House has amazing coffee!!! There is something just different about a small coffee shop’s coffee. I don’t know what it is but it’s different.
As someone who has traveled all over the world and to countries known for their coffee (hello Guatemala, Equator, Honduras, Peru, Tanzania, Italy…) I’ve had some amazing coffee. But nothing ever compares to the coffee at a local coffee shop. Maybe it’s a combination of the ambiance and the coffee. Or maybe it’s because small business owners put the secret ingredient of love in everything they do.
I don’t know what it is but I loved the coffee!!! As a diehard pumpkin-spiced latte lover, I had to try their version. It was not like any other PSL I’ve had before but it was amazing. Less pumpkin more spiced. I loved it!!! And I know any of their other coffee options would be awesome too.
5. Support Local Business
In the interest of full disclosure, Black Coffee and Waffle Bar has more than one location but I don’t consider it a chain. There are four locations, three in the Minneapolis/St Paul metro area and one in Fargo.
Since I live close to all three of their Minnesota locations and spent a lot of time in the Fargo/Moorhead area growing up, I consider Black Coffee and Waffle Bar local. They also use coffee roasted from a female-operated coffee roasting company in Minneapolis.
Support a local coffee shop and support a local coffee roaster, two for the price of one!!!
If you go for the waffles or go for the coffee, I know you will enjoy everything about Black Coffee and Waffle Bar in Downtown Fargo, ND. Check it out!!
