Who doesn’t want to watch a romantic movie for Valentine’s Day? Ok so a lot of people but Valentine’s Day is coming so I thought I’d write about some of my favorite romantic movies.
I love watching romantic comedies, dramedies, and dramas. Even when I was single. Not always on Valentine’s Day, Valentine’s Day was spent watching re-runs of Sex and the City. But every other day of the week I would watch romantic movies.
Several of these movies I have loved since I was in my tweens and teens. Others are newfound favorites. All are great romantic movies for Valentine’s Day. And most are movies even men will agree to watch…

Classic Romantic Drama – Dirty Dancing
I LOVE Dirty Dancing. I use to watch this movie at least once a week when I was in high school. Can’t really say why I love it so much. Maybe it’s because I’ve always loved dancing and wanted to be a dancer when I was a kid.
Or maybe it was because many romantic movies are about a rich man falling for a poor woman. But Dirty Dancing is about a poor man and a rich woman. Or maybe it is because let’s be honest, Patrick Swayze is HOT.
Whatever the reason, Dirty Dancing is not only one of my favorite romantic movies but it’s one of my favorite any kind of movies.
Summary: Baby, played by Jennifer Gray, is the daughter of a rich doctor. They spend their summer at a beautiful mountain resort but Baby would rather be doing something more meaningful. While out exploring the resort one night Baby meets one of the staff members who take her to the staff quarters where they have dance parties after hours.
She has a short dance with one of the staff dance instructors Johnny, played by Patrick Swayze. They have a connection and start spending more time together much to the dismay of Baby’s dad.
Rags to Riches Romantic Comedy – Pretty Woman
Unlike Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman is a romantic movie where a poor woman and a rich man fall in love. I love this movie not because it’s an adult twist on the classic fairy tale where the knight in shining armor rides on a white horse.
I love it because Vivian (Julia Roberts) is a strong woman who is doing what she can to make a living but knows it’s not something she will need to do forever. She never lets a man take control of her life and pushes to maintain respect.
Many people watch this romantic movie thinking she needs the man to get her out of the life she has but he needs her just as much if not more.
Summary: A rich business owner, Edward (Richard Gere), gets lost in a not-so-good part of LA. He is driving his attorney’s car which has a stick shift transmission. As he struggles to get the car in gear, he pulls over near a group of prostitutes. Vivian (Julia Roberts) approaches his car to see if he is interested. When Edward asks for directions to his hotel, she replies “it will cost you.”
Vivian gets in his car to help him get back to his hotel. He realizes he needs a date for a few events and offers her a business proposition. She plays his girlfriend and date for the week and he will pay her. They quickly find a connection and realize they are both better off with each other in their lives.
Love Across the Miles Romantic Movie – Sleepless in Seattle
It’s hard not to enjoy a Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan movie. They have fantastic on-screen chemistry you almost think they should be married in real life too. No offense to Rita Wilson! She and Tom Hanks are clearly made for each other.
Back to the romantic movie Sleepless in Seattle… this is a different kind of movie because the two characters fall in love without even meeting each other. It gives hope to those who can’t find love in their current location and shows that you can find a connection with someone anywhere.
Summary: After Sam’s (Tom Hanks) wife dies his son Jonah (Ross Mallinger) calls into a radio show asking to find a new wife for his dad. Annie (Meg Ryan) a reporter in Baltimore hears the story and feels a strong connection to not only Sam but Jonah.
She writes a letter to the radio station. When Jonah reads the letter, he realizes Annie is the one. The movie follows Annie in Baltimore and Sam with Jonah in Seattle as they both continue to feel a connection to each other on different sides of the country.
Male-Centric Romantic Movie – Hitch
Hitch is one of my newer favorite romantic movies. Not just because it was made in the 2000s vs 1980-90s, but because I actually didn’t watch this movie until a few years ago. My partner in crime LOVES Will Smith movies. One night he was going through the channels and stopped on Hitch.
I fell in love with it right away. Unlike many romantic movies that center around the woman’s experience with men, Hitch is about men’s experience with women. There are not many romantic movies from the man’s point of view. Think about that…
Summary: Alex “Hitch” Hitchens, played by Will Smith, is a love expert who helps awkward and nerdy men find a way to talk to and date women. And not just any women. But women are considered out of their league by society’s standards.
Albert (Kevin James), hires Hitch to help him attract a wealthy model. As Albert makes progress, Hitch finds himself on the other side by trying to find his own love. Turns out the saying those who can’t do teach, is perfect to explain how this goes down.
Long Lost Love Romantic Movie – Sweet Home Alabama
Sweet Home Alabama is one of those heartwarming romantic comedy movies that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. I love this movie because it makes you remember your roots. For any of you who left your hometown to expand your wings you know it’s easy to forget about where you came from. Our past is our past, it helped shape us into the people we are today.
But if you ignore where you came from, it will always come back to find you. Remember your roots.
Summary: Sweet Home Alabama is about a New York fashion designer Melanie (Reese Witherspoon) who gets engaged to a rich man whose mom is a politician. Melanie must face the secrets of her past which include her marriage to her high school sweetheart Jake (Josh Lucas).
When Melanie returns to her hometown to get a divorce, she finds it’s harder to let go of her history than she thought.
Why watch these Romantic Movies?
I love all of these romantic movies for different reasons. Some are classics, others are new twists on the same story. But all will leave your heart warm and most if not all of these movies are liked by men too. What could be better on Valentine’s Day than to snuggle up with a glass of wine and your boo to watch one of these movies.
Happy Valentine’s Day my friends!
