Self-confession, I’m not a fan of donuts. I know; I will lose followers for saying that but hear me out. I don’t usually eat donuts for one reason, they give me a stomach ache and I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the excessive sugar, maybe it’s the oil, maybe it’s both. But for whatever reason, donuts give me a stomach ache.

Or so I thought…

Occasionally I’m tempted by a unique flavor, the yummy smells from a bakery, or let’s face it, peer pressure. But sometimes I get tempted to try a donut. Over the years I have found a few donuts that I love and don’t make me sick.

My Grandma’s homemade donuts for one, and the others are from a small-town grocery store bakery in northern Minnesota, The Blackduck Grocery Store. If you ever go up there, you need to try the old-fashioned glazed donuts. They will blow your mind!!!

While researching places to eat in Downtown Fargo, I found Sandy’s Donuts. Since it was listed as a MUST-Do on numerous sites, I thought I’d give it a try.

I’m so glad I did. Keep reading for more on why Sandy’s Donuts is a Fargo institution.

Where is Sandy’s Donuts located?

Sandy’s Donuts has three locations; South Fargo, West Fargo, and Downtown Fargo. Since we were staying in downtown Fargo, the downtown location made sense for this trip.

Downtown Sandy’s Donuts location is at 300 Broadway N. Near the iconic Fargo Theater and across the street from the Jasper Hotel where we stayed.

What kind of Donuts does Sandy’s have?

It may be easier to answer what kind of donuts does Sandy’s Donuts NOT have. According to their website, they have approximately 54 different flavors available at any given time. Including two flavors of fritters, two different caramel roles a cronut.

The rest are all different flavors of donuts, Bismarck’s, and long johns. Cookies-n-Cream, M&M, Maple Fried Cinnamon, Espresso-Bean, Peanut Butter Lovers, Lemon, Birthday Cake, Old Fashion, and my personal favorite, Bavarian Cream.

I was skeptical of getting the dozen box so I opted for a half dozen to go. I figured if they were good, I would want more than one but also didn’t want to waste a lot. We were so glad we got six but part of me wished we had a dozen… I picked three and my partner in crime picked three.

It took WAY too long to decide. They all looked good but I was still worried they would make my stomach upset. I picked what I thought would be ok. Now that I know they did not give me stomach issues, there were many others I would love to try. Like the Blue Monster, as is the Muppet, a Cookie Monster decorated donut!

Or the peanut butter lovers.

Do they have coffee drinks at Sandy’s Donuts?

YES, what kind of donut shop would NOT have coffee…I mean let’s be real… Sandy’s Donuts does have coffee.

Like most donut shops they have delicious plain coffee. I don’t know why but they seem to have a different kind of coffee than other places.

They also do offer espresso drinks, lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, and several seasonal specialties. Since we were there during my favorite coffee time of the year, Pumpkin Spice Latte season, I of course needed to try their version.

While it was very different from other pumpkin spice lattes I’ve had, including the one at Black Coffee and Waffle Bar the day before, it was delicious! It had very little pumpkin flavoring and a lot more of the cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and clove spices flavors. I really loved it!!!

Can you order ahead?

Sandy’s Donuts website does offer the option to place online orders. In fact, when we got there, there were boxes of pre-orders stacked 4-5 boxes high and on every counter available. It was about 9:30 am on a Sunday morning when they opened at 6:30 and there were at least 40 boxes of pre-ordered donuts ready for pick up.

If you live in the area and need donuts for the office, an event, or just because they are amazing, you can place an order for pickup.

While we were there a woman came in with a little girl. The little girl was wearing a t-shirt that said birthday girl. They were there to pick up two boxes of pre-ordered donuts. The little girl was so excited! Happy Birthday to her.

Do they have seating inside Sandy’s?

Yes! There were several tables inside Sandy’s Donuts. While I suspect most people take their donuts to go, they do have tables and chairs if you want to sit and relax. In fact, the birthday girl did take a seat and ate one of the donuts before they left with the rest in tow.

Why do you need to try the donuts at Sandy’s Donuts?

I don’t normally eat donuts. They are good for the first few bits, but once I finish one, my stomach hurts and I regret it for a few hours. I have found however a few places that make donuts I not only love but also that don’t make my stomach hurt. Sandy’s Donuts is one of those places.

This family-owned business which has been open since 1983, has the magic touch when it comes to making memorial donuts. Traditional favorites like a simple chocolate frosted cake donut, or an old-fashioned sour cream, or a more fancy donut like the expresso-bean Bismark or a Butterfinger Crumble.

Whatever your tastes, you will find a donut to meet your needs.

And….they make for a great hangover cure… if you read my last post about the cheesy pickles from Toasted Frog, you know I can speak from personal experience. A Sandy’s Donut, leftover cheesy pickles from Toasted Frog, and a pumpkin-spiced latte worked wonders…
